Avocadoes - A Fad Food or Fair Dinkum Tucker!

Are Avocados “fad food”?

Bundaberg growers of avocados will tell you that the demand for avos around the world is still in its upward swing.

The humble avocado has had a rough marketing start. One grower said that it is not sweet or pretty, not like mango or banana.

Now avos are among the most Instagrammed products and are being used to market other products.

Australians are eating an average of 3 kilos of avos each year.

The Bundaberg region produces millions of trays of avocadoes every year. In Bundaberg, the shepard avos have a prime season of March and April. Bundaberg and the Atherton Tablelands are the only two places in the world that the shepard avocado grows.

Most of our avocado exports go to Singapore and Malaysia, Thailand, Japan and China.

Did you know that the avocado originated in Mexico sometime between 7,000 and 5,000 BC. Archaeologists in Peru have found domesticated avocado seeds buried with Incan mummies dating back to 750 BC.
