Back in the late 1960’s I compered a Wednesday afternoon live TV programme on Win TV which was sponsored by David Jones.
On one programme in 1968 the special guest was John Farnham who had his first hit called Sadie the Cleaning Lady which was released in 1967.
I can remember meeting John at the big studio door when he first arrived and he gave me a few details of his life.
He was born in London and emigrated to Australia when he was 10. He went to school in Victoria and after leaving school he became a plumber’s apprentice. ( No puns please about being a tap dancer)
Sadie was written by three Americans and was the highest selling single in Australia until “Up There Cazaly” was released in 1979.
It was also on the music charts in New Zealand, Denmark and Germany.
At school John formed a band with two friends and it was named The Mavericks.
Thanks to You Tube here is Sadie on Channel 9’s Bandstand with an introduction by Brian Henderson
